Update

As of Sunday, March 15th at 4:30m, All K - 12 classes in Alberta are suspended until further notice.

Please keep an eye on the blog to see what we are up to and please continue checking your email for any updates from Alberta Health and the CBE.

If you find yourself looking for curriculum rich family activities at home, think of some of the following activities:

1. Board Games that use strategy, reading, and math facts. Even rolling a dice is a quick exercise in building automaticity in basic math facts and stretching your mental math muscles. I encourage games like, Monopoly, Crib, and Aggravation.

2. Read with and to your kids. Start a read-aloud novel with your kids. Find something content appropriate and interesting for you and your child and read it out loud. Be sure to ask questions through out the reading. Some books I would recommend are Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. However, there are so many great novels out there.

3. Watch some documentaries together! Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, Human Planet are all amazing documentaries where students can continue to make connections between what we have done in the class and the world.

4. Think broadly about TEXT. Songs, Movies, Video Games, and conversations are all opportunities to discuss and build understanding of text and language. Discuss the meaning behind songs or movies. Investigate connections between books and movies.

Subtraction With Regrouping Video

Here are a couple of worksheets for practice:

And just in case you're choosing to keep your kids home this week, here is a link to a website where you can make your own worksheets across k - 12 curriculum.

Inquiry

Arctic House Building
Students have been using the design thinking method to think about problems the Arctic is facing in the future and then design a house to mitigate the damage and protect themselves. After learning about heat transfer, insulators, conductors, temperature and melting/freezing, students are considering all that information for their designs. Students have made designs and are now building their prototypes for future Arctic house. We have some exciting designs.

Literacy

We continue to work on writing and editing our Arctic stories.

In Mr. Sandberg's Flex Literacy class, students have been working on "er" words this week.

With the emphasis on Social Distancing, now is an excellent time to spend some time reading a novel out loud to your child. Find a novel that you are both interested in and go for it! Over Spring Break and beyond, I strongly encourage reading with your child.

Mission Impossible!
Students started Mission Impossible in Phys. Ed. this week. Have no fear I'm getting better at this every year.

Evergreen Theatre

This week we watched a play, inspired by the Wizard of Oz, about of wetlands. Enjoy this short clip.
