Insect Slide, Mental Math, and Role Playing!
Writing a Class Song
We started working on a class song this week. Students are still brainstorming ideas for us to write a song about. We're hoping to write a song that inspires community and belonging. Here's the music we have written so far.
Inquiry
Insect Google Slides
This week we created a rubric together so that we all understand and can refer to the expectations of our Insect Slide Show. Student also continued work on their slides, creating slides to show their insect lifecycle and discuss if their insect is helpful or harmful in Alberta.
Math
Patterns and Mental Math
This week we continued with repeating and growing patterns.
Mental Math
As well, we explicitly talked about and practiced some mental math strategies, such as Subitizing and Compensation. Below you will find an article on Subitizing and a video on Compensation. It should be noted that we started compensation with much smaller numbers than shown in the video.
Literacy
Text Connections and Build Stories through Role Playing!
We have started to build our comprehension and deepen our understanding of text by making text connections when engaging with text. There are three types of text connections that we have talked about: Text-to-self, text-to-world, and text-to-text.
As well as making text connections, we also started building stories through role playing. Students have created characters, written character backstories, and this week we began role playing our characters in a novel world created by our students. Students were lead through a map, in which they encountered various challenges that they had to solve while cooperating and making quick calculations based on dice rolls. Here is an example of our maps.
"Tion"
We also explored words that end in "Tion" this week. Here is our brainstorm poster.
Dance
Students started their dance residency this week. They will have 6 total sessions with their dance instructors. They are learning how to bust a move, while I try not to bust anything.
Book Fair
Mr. Sandberg and Mrs. Craig's class will have the opportunity to PREVIEW the book fair this Tuesday. On Thursday evening and Friday morning, families and students will be able to visit the book fair and make purchases.
