Math
Today we started Shape and Space, or in other words, Geometry. Students had to help me to define a square so that I could draw a correct square. The class made 3 simple rules:
1. has four 90 degree corners
2. Has 4 sides that are the same length
3. Has an Up side, followed by a Right side, then a Down side and lastly a Left side.
We then used our rules to build our own squares, cubes and objects containing both.
Inquiry
Having built their own Arctic structures and city at Open Minds, students are now planning an Arctic city in the future. They must take into account the effects of Climate Change in the Arctic and design structures that have been adapted to the challenges of a melting Arctic. Some of the challenges we have started to think about include, rising sea levels, the melting of the permafrost, and the effects of no sea ice on animal and human communities.
Writing
Students are working on story boarding and planning their own Arctic stories.
